Hey, I have surfed a bit and I know that 'stricter' is preferred but is it all right to use 'more strict'?

Hi I heard "more strict" the other day and it sounded a little odd. The rule goes that if you have a single syllable adjective, then add "er". As "strict" fits that description, I'd go with "stricter". That, of course, is not to say that in some parts of the US, Canada, or even the UK, "more strict" is being used and considered "natural".

Grammatically speaking, the word 'stricter' means 'more strict'! No one (outside a standard language exam perhaps) is going to call saying 'more strict' incorrect. Grammatically or otherwise. It is not a mistake, and it is not dialectal. It is an exception to the rule.

MIGHT definition: 1. past simple of the verb may, used especially when reporting what someone has said, thought…. Learn more.

As you can see, may and might aren’t diametrically opposed. While may is often used to ask for or imply permission, might has nothing to do with permission—at least, in American English.

Words like might and could are known as modals, since they express certain "moods" (for example, I might go indicates an uncertain mood on the part of the speaker).

You use might to indicate that something will possibly happen or be true in the future, but you cannot be certain.

For many speakers, the use as the past tense of the auxiliary may, indicating permission, is obsolete: I told him he might not see her will only be interpreted as "I told him he would possibly not see her," and not as "I told him he was not allowed to see her."

"Might" is a modal verb most commonly used to express possibility. It is also often used in conditional sentences. English speakers can also use "might" to make suggestions or requests, although this is less common in American English.

Criminal law concerns the system of legal rules that define what conduct is classified as a crime and how the government may prosecute individuals that commit crimes. Federal, state, and local governments all have penal codes that explain the specific crimes that they prohibit and the punishments that criminals may face. Individuals who violate federal, state, and local laws may face fines ...

These codes, published by both the U.S. Government and by individual states, represent the codification of statutes (laws) passed by the United States Congress and individual state legislatures or governing bodies.

While laws are positive "is" statements (e.g. the fine for reversing on a highway is €500); law tells us what we "should" do. Thus, each legal system can be hypothesised to have a 'basic norm' (German: Grundnorm) instructing us to obey.

In mathematics, a limit is the value that a function (or sequence) approaches as the argument (or index) approaches some value. [1] Limits of functions are essential to calculus and mathematical analysis, and are used to define continuity, derivatives, and integrals. The concept of a limit of a sequence is further generalized to the concept of a limit of a topological net, and is closely ...

Section 2.10 : The Definition of the Limit In this section we’re going to be taking a look at the precise, mathematical definition of the three kinds of limits we looked at in this chapter. We’ll be looking at the precise definition of limits at finite points that have finite values, limits that are infinity and limits at infinity. We’ll also give the precise, mathematical definition of ...
