Compute elevation profile for an arbitrary path Many of the profile options are not available when viewing Google elevation data English Metric Decimal places (0-6) DD.DDDDDD° DD° MM.MMMM' DD° MM' SS.SS"
But Google Maps uses the Mercator projection. So you're thinking that the path drawn on the map and the path actually traversed in computing the profile must diverge somewhat. For example, that line from 30N 120W to 40N 80W, if it's a straight line on a Mercator projection, should pass through 35.1534N 100W, about 10 miles to the north of 35N 100W.
What's the Path Profiler? The Path Profiler generates an elevation profile for an arbitrary path. Build a path, hit calculate profile, and you'll get the elevation profile (the hills and valleys you'd traverse as you travel that path). You can add points to the path by clicking on the map or by entering addresses and hitting Find.
The landcover information is only a visual addition to the profiles; it is not currently taken into account in either the path quality computation (that determines the +++, ++, ... and the color of the towers) or the viewsheds. In addition to the land cover data, we're looking at US tree canopy data from the same USGS source.
