Equipment in the Milw/NCS and HC pools are maintained by Metra at Western Ave (assuming previously a Milwaukee Road facility but don't know for sure). If you see a trainset oriented "backwards" north of Union Station, it's a HC trainset heading to or from Western Ave.
It does appear WSMTD is gone. Explains BNSF cars on Orland trains and original Metra cars on BNSF if now straight Metra owned. I know that originally, the Burlington required much stronger frames & anti-telescoping structures on its commuter coaches than the rest of the local RRs running bilevel commuter trains.
Looking around the Board meeting minutes, I came across a reference that the following RFP was "on the street": While I didn't log into the business portal, it appears from the above that Metra is investigating putting battery electric trains on the Rock Island District. A Metra number on a former C&NW car would have been 87xx, if a cab car. It wasn't a cab car, it was the second car behind the engine. I rode it on Tuesday. It also didn't have the old flip over C&NW seats that had a metal back & upholstery on just one side, but the current seats that just flip back & forth with upholstery on both sides.
Metra car number is 8718 - that car came back as part of a group of 6 sometime in 2014 and has been in service on the UP lines since returning. Not sure if VRE or Metra is responsible for the seat swap.
RTAMS has a Metra Ridership by Station - Boarding & Alighting Survey (1979-2018). Melrose Park had about 86 boardings and 107 alightings in 2018; River Forest 448/441; Maywood 87/69. Compare to Oak Park 991/1106; Elmhurst 2540/2347; Lombard 1502/1472. So, if the aim were anything other than rebuilding ridership, Maywood and Melrose Park wouldn't be worth the 4 minute delay per stop. By ...
The Chicago Tribune recently published an article explaining that Metra has some issues collecting ALL fares.
