Supplementary Feeding of Honey Bee Colonies Honey bees can be fed various foodstuffs to supplement inadequate supplies of pollen or honey. In early spring before pollen and nectar are available or at other times of the year when these materials are in short supply, supplementary feeding may help the colony survive or make it more populous and productive. As modern land-use practices reduce ...
Solid, bee-tight hive equipment is necessary because any secondary openings will be eagerly sought by bees to avoid passing through the pollen trap grid. Two pollen trap designs are described.
Great presentation from Mr. Steve Riley from this year's National Honey Show just dropped. He and Dr. Stephen Martin host and maintain varroaresistant.uk and work closely with the growing cohort of TF beekeepers in the UK. A few slides outline the fundamental dynamics at work in the colonies...
The core idea behind the Primal Bee hive is thermal efficiency. Most standard hives, even insulated ones, lose a huge amount of heat through poor design and box geometry. That heat loss forces bees to spend massive amounts of energy just to maintain brood temperature, especially in cooler months or during early development.
Bee barns seems to lose a lot of conventional options like Demaree, swapping hive locations to equalize, finding the queen seems way harder on massive frame! It seems like so many manipulations are based on standard equipment which seems standard for a reason.
The reciprocal cross of a Carniolan queen with Italian drones results in a bee that is less well behaved than the Carniolan parent but swarms more excessively than the Carniolan. The behavior comes from the Italian drones and the excess swarming from the Carniolan queen. This is another double example of a male and a female account.
Has anyone made or seen plans for a bee hunting box?Or done any bee lining?I'd like to try and locate some feral hives this summer. Thanks,Jack
Hi there- I am looking for some ideas for science fair projects that would involve bees. I have a handful of hives and some interested first through 6th graders that would like to help. What better than getting them started now on a science fair project! Thanks matthew in moscow

Primal Bee designs climate-adaptive, thermodynamic hives that enhance brood health, reduce interventions, and improve honeybee colony performance year-round.
Has anyone noticed that bees tend to build better on darker frames? Or is it just me? I double coated both black and yellow plastic frames with wax, and gave one hive all black frames, and the other all yellow ones. Both hives had 8 frames of brood on the bottom box, and the black frame box...
